Maggie Sullivan ’21, of West Roxbury, Massachusetts was celebrated by Governor Charlie Baker at a digital ceremony as a “29 Who Shine Award” recipient. The Massachusetts Division of Greater Training award honors 29 superb learners, a person from just about every public establishment, in the Class of 2021. Sullivan, who is majoring in Political Science and minoring in Leadership and Civic Engagement with a 4. As a College Constructive Tour Coordinator, Sullivan labored with local school districts to present excursions of the UMass Dartmouth campus to all 7th graders in Tumble River and New Bedford. Through the tour, college pupils share their own stories about their paths to school helping to establish a peer-to-peer connection with the college students. UMassD college students instill the great importance of better instruction and demonstrate that if they can achieve their goals, so can these youthful pupils.
When the pandemic struck, in-man or woman tours were being canceled, but Sullivan observed an chance to continue on delivering this important encounter to college students. She created a module that provided a virtual on the web tour with UMassD learners that highlighted the choices that universities have to provide. The module can be delivered by 7th-grade lecturers and features a digital Q & A with university students. The module has been shared with several educational institutions on the SouthCoast, allowing for far more than 5,000 learners to gain perception into life as a university college student.
“It is so critical to reach these college students early and notify them that faculty is a possibility for all people. There are excellent sources out there aimed at earning faculty far more obtainable and reasonably priced, but too generally learners and family members really don’t know about them. Sullivan is an Endeavor Scholar and 2020 Campus Compact Newman Fellow who has a passion for community service, schooling, and political science.
