2021: UMass Dartmouth student named to Massachusetts Section of Higher Schooling “29 Who Shine”

Maggie Sullivan ’21, of West Roxbury, Massachusetts was celebrated by Governor Charlie Baker at a digital ceremony as a “29 Who Shine Award” recipient. The Massachusetts Division of Greater Training award honors 29 superb learners, a person from just about every public establishment, in the Class of 2021. Sullivan, who is majoring in Political Science and minoring in Leadership and Civic Engagement with a 4. GPA, was picked for this prestigious university student award for her operate escalating the instructional aspirations of pupils in SouthCoast communities.

As a College Constructive Tour Coordinator, Sullivan labored with local school districts to present excursions of the UMass Dartmouth campus to all 7th graders in Tumble River and New Bedford. Through the tour, college pupils share their own stories about their paths to school helping to establish a peer-to-peer connection with the college students. UMassD college students instill the great importance of better instruction and demonstrate that if they can achieve their goals, so can these youthful pupils.

When the pandemic struck, in-man or woman tours were being canceled, but Sullivan observed an chance to continue on delivering this important encounter to college students. She created a module that provided a virtual on the web tour with UMassD learners that highlighted the choices that universities have to provide. The module can be delivered by 7th-grade lecturers and features a digital Q & A with university students. The module has been shared with several educational institutions on the SouthCoast, allowing for far more than 5,000 learners to gain perception into life as a university college student.

“It is so critical to reach these college students early and notify them that faculty is a possibility for all people. There are excellent sources out there aimed at earning faculty far more obtainable and reasonably priced, but too generally learners and family members really don’t know about them. Not only that, but learners generally find by themselves in a position by the time they end superior school in which they have presently resolved that higher education is not for them. Bringing these college students to campus at an early age permits them to visualize by themselves as higher education students and plant the seeds in their minds that there are means out there to enable them get to higher education,” claimed Sullivan.

Sullivan is an Endeavor Scholar and 2020 Campus Compact Newman Fellow who has a passion for community service, schooling, and political science. Exterior of her schoolwork and campus volunteering chances, she has served as a Stanley Miller Fellow with the Workplace of Congressman Stephen Lynch, an intern with Boston Town Councilor Michelle Wu, and a Deitch Management Institute Fellow at the John Joseph Moakley U.S. Courthouse in Boston.
